About Cyprus
Cyprus, is an island in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, located south of Turkey and southeast of Greece. Cyprus is well known for its warm weather and scenic beaches, but that isn’t everything the island has to offer. You’ll also find quaint historic villages, ancient ruins, incredible mountains and wonderful, vibrant cities. Cyprus is a presidential republic. The president is both head of state and government. Despite joining the EU as a de facto divided island, the whole of Cyprus is EU territory. Turkish Cypriots who have, or are eligible for, EU travel documents are EU citizens. EU law is suspended in areas where the Cypriot government (Government of the Republic) does not exercise effective control. Cyprus has two official languages: Greek and Turkish.
North Cyprus is the Turkish controlled part of the island of Cyprus. In 1974, Cyprus has been divided into two separate states. Northern Cyprus (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) is a de facto sovereign state that comprises the northern portion of the island of Cyprus. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognised only by Turkey. Northern Cyprus is considered by the international community to be part of the Republic of Cyprus.
